Port
Aransas 2005
Delta
1/5
Reunion
The
next Delta 1/5 Reunion will be “The Port Aransas 2005
Reunion
” hosted by Frank and Denise Satterfield. The Reunion will
be at Port
Aransas
,
Texas
from Thursday June 23, 2005 thru Sunday June 26, 2005 (arriving on
the 23rd, and departing on Monday June 27th).
Corpus Christi
, 44 miles away, is the closest airport and is served by
Continental, and Southwest Airlines. Cars can be rented at the
airport. Also, we will figure out a transportation schedule to get
people from the airport to Port Aransas. More info will be
forthcoming.
Frankie
has reserved rooms under his name at the Tarpon Inn, the primary
place for us to stay. The phone number is 361-749-5555. You should
call and make your individual reservations by telling them you are
with the Marine Corps Reunion group, that all of the rooms are
reserved under
Frank Satterfield
, and that you want the reservation in your name. There are only
23 rooms, so it will be on a first come first serve basis. The
Tarpon Inn has been a landmark for over a century, hosting
vacationers from all over the world, including many distinguished
public figures. For history and further information on The
Tarpon Inn, please visit their site: www.thetarponinn.com
. If full, you can make a reservation at the Captain’s
Quarters Inn (361-749-6005), which is just down the street from
the Tarpon Inn.
The Tarpon Inn will
be the primary place for us to stay:

The
reasons that The Tarpon Inn was selected are because:
1) Its
perfectly located for our needs; reference to restaurants and
bars.
2)
Has wide porches and rocking chairs perfect for conversations.
3)
Has a room we can reserve for a hospitality room.
4)
Just a great atmosphere and ambience for our purposes.
5)
The beds are very comfortable, and the air-conditioning is quite
good.
The
Tarpon Inn is very old, but quite comfortable and close to
everything. However, it does have a drawback, which is that
it is very old, and has some features that make it uncomfortable
for some (There are no handicap rooms, and some of the bathrooms
are cramped). There are no telephones or TV's.

The Captain’s
Quarters will be the overflow facility:

The
Captain's Quarters has handicap rooms; one with a king size bed,
and one with two Queen size beds. The Tarpon Inn and The
Captain’s Quarters are only a five minute walk, or less from one
another. Frankie has spoken to personnel at the Captain’s
Quarters about us, so they should know what people are talking
about when they call, and he will continue to alert them. There
are many other places to stay as well, but these are the most
convenient.
On
Thursday and Friday there will be opportunities for everyone to do
something fun such as boat rides, fishing expeditions, beach
activities, or just hanging out. The Tarpon Inn has a room we can
use as a gathering place, or Shorty's Bar and The Back Porch are
just down the street. Frankie and Denise have had dinner at
the Pelican Club, and it was outstanding. The waterfront is only a
block away. On the way to the waterfront you must pass Shorty's
bar, where you can stop for a cold brewski to ease the hardship of
the walk in the heat (1/2 block from the Tarpon Inn). Then
when you get to the waterfront, you can rest at The Back Porch and
watch the ships go thru the harbor as you have another cool one
and rest up from the ordeal. Or, you could stop at
Virginia
's another block down the waterfront and grab a burger to go with
your cool one if the walk made you ravenous. Later on, you could
make a night move, and catch a local band at The Back Porch, or at
Shorty's. For you single guys, if dancin and chasing women is your
thing, then Sharkey's is the place to be. The beach is close
by, and if you want to fish off a pier, that is available also.
Port Aransas is a very good place for off shore fishing. If
deep sea fishing is of interest, then that can be arranged as
well. We can reserve a fishing boat for those that would
like to do that on Friday, or Sunday. A boat excursion to
watch the Dolphins is also available as is an afternoon or evening
on the Gambling boat. Port Aransas has very wide beaches,
and is a fun place for kids. Those of you that would like to
bring kids, or grandkids, feel free to do so. By the
way, Frank and Denise have already spoken to the proprietor of
Shorty's (a local establishment of some notoriety) about making it
our local Head Quarters for the week of the
Reunion
.

She
(Shorty is a woman) is honored that we would consider her place to
be the unofficial Delta 1/5 Reunion HQs. She is going to have a
banner made up and draped over the entrance to Shorty’s
welcoming Delta 1/5 to Port Aransas. Shorty's has been in
continuous operation since 1946. It’s a ramshackle
building with a front porch that is a Port Aransas landmark.
They only serve beer, but you can bring your own bottle (they are
happy with that, keeps the cost down too). Thursday, when people
arrive, we can congregate at Shorty's and people can make their
own plans for dinner etc. All the restaurants are within
walking distance, or a very short drive
We
will be having a Memorial service on Saturday afternoon, June
25th, to honor those of us that didn’t make it back. We
can read off all the names for those KIA’s that Delta had during
the war, plus those that have passed since. Frankie is
working on a couple details, including securing a Marine
detachment for the Ceremony. The Memorial Service will be
followed by a gathering at Frankie and Denise’s house.
Other
details are still being worked on and you will be kept posted as
development occurs. Meantime you can visit the following
